Ada Bojana by Car, A Day Trip from Ulcinj

A triangular river island where the Bojana meets the Adriatic, famous for stilt-house fish restaurants, nudist tradition and one of the strongest kitesurfing winds on the coast

What Ada Bojana is

Ada Bojana is a roughly triangular river island at the mouth of the Bojana (Buna) river, which forms the Montenegro-Albania border at its southern tip. It is bounded by the Adriatic Sea on one side and two arms of the river on the other two, so you drive onto it across a small bridge and feel immediately that you have crossed into a different kind of landscape, flat, sandy, reed-lined, and quiet.

The island was made famous by a Yugoslav-era experiment: in the 1970s it opened as a naturist resort, one of the first officially sanctioned nudist destinations in socialist Europe. That reputation lingers, the western beach is still clothing-optional in parts, but today most visitors come for the fish restaurants built on stilts over the river, the endless flat sand, and the steady cross-shore winds.

The drive from Ulcinj

From central Ulcinj, head south-east on the coastal road toward Štoj and Velika Plaža, then turn off at the signposted "Ada Bojana" junction. The full drive is about 13 km and takes 20-25 minutes in normal traffic. The last couple of kilometres run through low farmland and reedbeds, ending at a small bridge where you cross onto the island itself. In July and August the single-lane bridge can back up at midday, go early or go late.

The internal roads on Ada are sand and gravel. Any standard rental handles them dry, but after heavy rain the soft shoulder chews up low-slung cars. Park near whichever restaurant or beach section you are heading for; there are no paid lots.

River delta at Ada Bojana

The stilt-house fish restaurants

The signature sight of Ada is the string of wooden fishing huts, locally called "kalimera", built directly over the river on stilts, each with a large square net suspended below that is winched up several times a day. The system is a centuries-old technique you also see on the Albanian side of the Bojana. Many of these huts have evolved into small restaurants with terraces hanging over the water.

The menu rarely varies: grilled sea bass or sea bream, river eel, mussels, shrimp, and a plate of fried small fish. Expect a starter of fish pâté and warm bread, plain salad, and house white. Prices are typically charged by weight for whole fish, ask before ordering. If you'd rather eat in town first, our guide to Ulcinj's fish restaurants covers the harbour-side options.

Kitesurfing on the river mouth

The river mouth and the Adriatic-facing beach are among the most consistent kitesurfing spots in the southern Adriatic. The prevailing summer afternoon wind blows cross-shore over flat shallow water at the river mouth, which is close to ideal for learners, while the outer beach serves stronger wave conditions for experienced riders. Several kite schools operate from the island between May and October, renting gear by the hour or day.

The beach itself

Ada's seaward beach is roughly 3 km of fine dark sand, merging at its northern end into the much longer Velika Plaža. It shelves very gradually, you can wade out a long way in waist-deep water, which is why families often base here. The naturist-designated section is on the far side of the island; the central and northern sections are conventional. There are a handful of beach bars with sunbeds for rent in summer, but long stretches are completely undeveloped.

When to go

June and September are the sweet spot, warm water, full restaurant operation, fewer crowds than peak August. July and August are busy but lively; most restaurants and kite schools run full service. In winter, much of the island shuts down, though a couple of the stilt restaurants stay open on weekends for local diners. The bridge access and internal roads can flood briefly after storms.

Practical tips

  • Cash: Most stilt restaurants take cards now, but a few of the smaller kalimera are cash-only. Carry euros.
  • Mosquitoes: It's a river delta, bring repellent in the evening.
  • Passports: You don't need them for Ada itself; the Albanian border is downstream of the island, not on it.
  • Shade: Very little natural shade on the open beach. Umbrellas for hire at the lifeguarded sections.
  • Combine with: A morning on Ada plus an afternoon driving the rest of Velika Plaža works as a single day.

What to do next

Continue north-west along the coast to explore the full 13 km of Velika Plaža, or head back into town for dinner in the Ottoman Old Town.
