Why the trip is worth doing
Ulcinj sits closer to the Albanian border than to any Montenegrin airport, the Sukobin / Muriqan crossing is less than a half-hour drive, and Shkodër, Albania's northern city on the shores of Lake Skadar, is easily reached in under an hour. That makes a day trip into Albania one of the most rewarding excursions available from the town: a genuine border crossing, a completely different atmosphere and currency, and a historic city built around a massive hilltop castle.
You can comfortably drive out in the morning, have lunch and a long walk around Shkodër's old centre, visit Rozafa Castle, and be back on the Ulcinj coast for sunset.
The papers you need
Taking a Montenegrin rental car into Albania requires permission in advance. Specifically:
- A Green Card extension for Albania. Your Montenegrin rental's Green Card (the international motor insurance certificate) must explicitly list Albania as a covered country. It often does not by default, you need to ask for it when booking and confirm in writing. At our partner desks, we issue the Albania-covered Green Card on request, usually free or for a small administrative fee.
- Passport for every occupant. An EU/EEA identity card is accepted for some nationalities but a passport is the safe default.
- Original rental contract and the car's registration documents (Saobraćajna dozvola). Both kept in the glove box by default, check before you leave.
- Driving licence. Your home licence is accepted for short visits.
Our border crossing guide has the full breakdown including what to do if something is missing.
The route to the border
From Ulcinj, head south-east on the coastal road past Štoj and follow signs for Sukobin. The full drive to the border post is roughly 15 km and takes about 25 minutes. The road is sealed two-lane throughout and in good condition in recent years.
What the crossing looks like
Sukobin (Montenegrin side) / Muriqan (Albanian side) is a small, calm border post. Outside peak summer weekends it's usually a matter of minutes: you hand over passports, the car documents and the Green Card, the officer stamps and waves you through. In July and August, and on Friday evenings or Sunday afternoons, the queue can run 30-60 minutes in each direction.
There is no exit fee from Montenegro and no entry fee into Albania for standard passenger vehicles. Some older guides mention a small road-use or disinfection charge on the Albanian side, in practice you may or may not be asked for one or two euros.
Roads once you're in
The road from Muriqan to Shkodër is roughly 25 km and takes around 30-40 minutes. It is a comfortable two-lane road through reasonably flat farmland. Driving style in northern Albania is more assertive than in Montenegro, expect overtaking on solid lines, slow tractors, and the occasional horse-cart. Keep to the posted limits (typically 80 km/h outside towns, 40-50 km/h through villages) and you'll be fine. Fuel is cheaper than in Montenegro; most stations on the main road take cards.
A half-day in Shkodër
Shkodër is one of Albania's oldest cities, built at the confluence of three rivers on the southern shore of Lake Skadar. The historic pedestrian street (Rruga Kolë Idromeno) has restored 19th-century shopfronts, cafés and bookshops. A ten-minute drive south-west brings you to Rozafa Castle, the city's defining sight, a large medieval fortress perched on a rocky hill with sweeping views over the lake, the Drin river, and the city. Entry is a few euros in local lek or euros.
Food is excellent and cheap: a full lunch at a good central restaurant runs €8-15 per head.
Currency and money
Albania's currency is the lek. Most tourist-facing restaurants, cafés and hotels in Shkodër will accept euros, usually at a slightly unfavourable rate. ATMs are plentiful in the city centre. Cards are widely accepted in restaurants and fuel stations, less so at small shops and markets.
The return
Leave Shkodër by late afternoon to be back at the border before the evening queue builds. Keep your Albanian entry stamp accessible for the exit. On the Montenegrin side, the officer will sometimes ask for the Green Card again; have it visible in the glove box.
