MONTENEGRO / BUDVA

Car rental in Budva,
ninety minutes up the coast.

Budva is 65 km from Ulcinj on the coast road, about an hour and a half, and one town of many in the rest of Montenegro. A day trip, a one-way drop-off or a pick-up in Budva: each is a different booking, and the search prices all three.

Ninety minutes north.
Three ways to book it.

Ulcinj and Budva are separate cities in the booking system, so driving up for the day and finishing the rental up there are not the same booking. Only finishing the rental there is a one-way.

01

Keep the car in Ulcinj

Collect and return in the same place, and treat Budva as a day out. Nothing changes in the booking.

What to have with you

A national licence in Latin script, not a copy, and the deposit card in the main driver’s name. Each car states its own minimum age and driving experience.

BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF

At the handover,
check three things.

01

Photograph the wheels

Wheels, windscreen, the underside and the interior sit outside standard insurance. Record them at the handover.

02

Note the fuel level

It comes back at the level you were given. Below it you pay the difference at the company’s rates, and above it you are not compensated.

03

Ask how to say you are running late

Extending is allowed if you inform the rental company in advance; ask at the handover how to reach them.

Is Budva a day out
or the end of the rental?

Budva is ninety minutes north of Ulcinj on the coast road.

The same road, three different bookings

If Budva is a day out from a week in the south, nothing about the rental changes. The car is collected and returned in the same place. In August the coast road takes longer than ninety minutes.

If Budva is where the trip ends, that is a different booking. Different pick-up and drop-off cities make it a one-way, and it is priced as one. And if Budva is where the trip starts, a car waiting when you get in can be arranged the same way.

The nearest airport to Budva is Tivat. It is 85 km and about two hours from Ulcinj, and the drive down from Tivat Airport runs through Budva.

Parking, fines and cover in Budva

Parking and fines are the renter’s for the whole rental under the conditions.

Standard cover does not include the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen or the interior. What a higher level of cover adds is described on each car rather than promised in general.

The coast road is slowest through the towns in the middle of the day in July and August.

Photograph the wheels at the handover, with the person handing the car over.

The road up, and the road back

Sixty-five kilometres, about ninety minutes, and every metre of it on the coast road. Sveti Stefan is a little before Budva, at about eighty-five minutes. In July and August both take longer, because the coast road passes through one town after another.

The return is on the same road. On the coast road back south, Bar is forty minutes from Ulcinj.

North of Budva the coast road enters the Boka, where it is narrower and slower.

If the plan changes while you are up there

Rentals run in whole days with a twenty-four hour minimum, so an extra afternoon is an extra day rather than a few hours. If you decide to stay, tell the rental company before the rental ends rather than after: extending is allowed and the conditions ask that the agent is informed in advance.

The phone number given at booking must be reachable throughout the rental, with its country code, including on WhatsApp, Viber or Telegram.

Fuel is unchanged wherever you have been: back at the level you were given, the difference charged at the company’s rates if it is lower, nothing back if it is higher.

What do people ask
before they book?

Answers about driving to Budva from the south and about finishing a rental there.

Is Budva a day trip or a drop-off?

Either, and they are different bookings. A day trip changes nothing; finishing the rental in Budva is a one-way, because the two towns are separate cities in the booking system, and it is priced as one.

How long is the drive from Ulcinj?

Sixty-five kilometres and about an hour and a half on the coast road, with Sveti Stefan a little before it. In July and August allow more, because the coast road passes through one town after another.

What does the standard insurance not cover?

The wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior, and it does not cover deliberate damage or neglect at all. Each car says what a higher level of cover adds.

Can I keep the car an extra day?

Yes, if you inform the rental company in advance. Rentals are counted in whole days with a twenty-four hour minimum, so an extra afternoon is charged as another day.
