BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF

At the handover,
check three things.

01

Photograph the four parts the cover excludes

Wheels, windscreen, the underside and the interior are outside standard insurance on every car here. Record them at the handover.

02

Check what the car itself asks for

Minimum age and driving experience are on the car’s own page, and the rental company can decline a car if they are not met.

03

Note the fuel level

It comes back at the level you were given. Below it you pay the difference at the company’s rates, and above it you are not compensated.

Which car suits
the roads here?

Any of the models listed here fits the coast roads, and none is allowed off a paved road.

The roads around Ulcinj

The coast road is a single carriageway through a string of towns, the inland road to the capital has a tunnel on it, and the difficult stretches are narrow rather than rough.

Old town streets, beach car parks in August and village lanes are easier with a small car. What no car here changes is the rule under the rental: these are allowed on paved public roads only. A car with more ground clearance is under the same rule. The driving guide covers what the driving is really like.

The small cars

The car most often listed here is the Renault Clio. Beside it, the Toyota Yaris is similar in size and usually an automatic.

Alongside them, the Skoda Fabia and the Citroen C3 are the other small models listed. The Fabia is usually automatic and the C3 manual.

Any of them is enough car for a week based in Ulcinj, including the drive to either airport. Which of them is available depends on your dates.

The compacts and the estate

For four people with luggage there is the Volkswagen Golf, the compact listed most consistently at Ulcinj in the windows measured. It is automatic on the listings measured.

The other compacts are the Peugeot 308 and the Renault Megane, both listed less often than the Golf. Both are automatics on the listings measured.

Bigger again, the Volkswagen Passat is the estate in this selection and the longest car in it. Whichever it is, the minimum age and driving experience are set per car rather than across the board, and two similar models can ask for different things. The search filters hide the ones you do not qualify for.

Automatic or manual, and what the cover excludes

Most of what is listed for Ulcinj is automatic. Manuals are also listed.

Availability changes with the dates. The models here appear in all three booking windows measured; the small cars were listed most often, and the compacts and the estate less often.

Standard insurance leaves out the wheels, the undercarriage, the windscreen and the interior on every model here. What a higher level of cover adds is described on each car.

Fuel is the same on all of them too: back at the level you were given, the difference charged at the company’s rates if it is lower, nothing back if it is higher. And whichever car you pick, where each of these is handed over is set by the company you book with and stated before you reserve, delivery included.

What do people ask
before they book?

Answers about choosing a car for the roads around Ulcinj.

Which car suits the roads out of Ulcinj?

A small one. Old town streets and beach car parks are easier with a small car. No rental car may leave a paved road, whatever its ground clearance.

Do I need an automatic?

No, but most of what is listed for Ulcinj is automatic.

Is a bigger car better for the beach roads?

No. Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only, so a larger car cannot legitimately go anywhere a small one cannot.

What does the standard insurance not cover?

The wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior, on every model. Each car says what a higher level of cover adds.
