ULCINJ / GUIDES
Drives from Ulcinj in Montenegro, with routed distances, the conditions that apply, and which roads have not been measured.
Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only, so each guide ends where the tarmac does.
The limits, the daytime headlights, the two things carried by law and the one toll in the country.
Read the driving guideWhat the conditions require, how far it is, and what has not been established.
Read the border guideSvac minted its own coins and has been a ruin since 1571. The routed drive, the disputed distance and an unmeasured road.
Read the guideFifteen clauses, quoted in full rather than summarised. Clause 8 limits rental cars to paved public roads.
Read the conditionsHOW THESE ARE WRITTEN
Two engines, in both directions. One is the source and the other is the cross-check, and where they disagree the page gives both.
Each page names its source, whether a tourist organisation or a travel publisher. No site in our own family is ever a source.
Where a road has not been measured, the guide says so rather than describing it.
These guides are written for a hire car based in Ulcinj. Distances are routed, and each drive ends where the sealed road does.
Each guide covers a rental car, which comes with conditions. They say whether a road is sealed and where you have to stop and walk. The same conditions that car rental down in Ulcinj sets at the handover apply on all of these roads.
Where a figure is routed, it says so and gives the engine. Where a fact comes from a tourist organisation, it is attributed. Where nobody has established something, the page says so.
And no page in here quotes a price. The one live number on this site is in the search.
There are three guides: how the roads behave, what the border asks of a hire car, and the drive inland to a fortress ruin. All three work from the same conditions: paved public roads only, the cross-border add-on for leaving the country, and the fuel back at the level it was given.
The short drives from Ulcinj are ten to forty minutes each way. The beach is about five kilometres south-east of the town, and the beach these routes end at runs for twelve of them down to the river mouth, where the fish restaurants are. Bar is about forty minutes north, and the old town on the hill behind it a little nearer.
The guides to those are about two things: where the signed roads end, and what the rental conditions say about the surface past them.
Past the end of the tarmac, a rental car is outside the conditions.
Inland, the lake is about an hour and five minutes, the capital about an hour and a half, and the dead city above Sasko jezero about an hour by the routed roads. The driving guide covers what the roads ask for, from the daytime headlights to the one toll in the country.
South, the Albanian border is closer to Ulcinj than Budva is. Taking a hire car across is an add-on you choose when you book, on a car that offers it.
The beach, the river island, the bay west of town, the southern shore of the lake, the old town and the road to Albania are all covered on the pages where somebody booking a car for them would land. For any of them, each car in the search shows its pick-up point and its delivery terms before you book, for your own dates. Where a place calls for a one-way booking rather than a return, the search prices that too, one-way fee included, before you commit to anything.
The fortress guide covers a ruin an hour inland, where published distances disagree. The olive country has a sentence and a link on the driving guide rather than a page of its own. On any of those drives, the phone number given at booking has to stay reachable for the whole rental, messengers included, because that is how the rental company reaches you.
No drive here needs a large car, and the cars these drives are written for are the small automatics and compacts listed in Ulcinj. Choose between them by the number of people and the luggage.
If you are still working out how to arrive, the airport most readers fly into is 75 km and about an hour and a half north of the town, with Tivat about half an hour further. Both are separate places in the booking system, so collecting at one and finishing here is a one-way.
Questions that come up across all of these guides.
For most of it, yes. The beach is twelve kilometres of sand with a handful of signed access roads, the fish restaurants are forty minutes south, and the inland sites are an hour away.
No. Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only, so sand, dunes and unmade tracks are outside the conditions and outside the insurance, whatever car you are in.
Because the detail is not established. Where a road’s surface, a car park’s charge or a crossing’s hours have not been verified from a source worth quoting, the guide says so rather than filling the gap.
No. Not for the rental, the parking or the restaurants. The search is the only live number on this site, and it prices your own dates.
