The nearest bay,
and the shortest drive.

Nothing about the booking changes for a fifteen-minute drive. Where the tarmac ends, park and walk.

02

Drive to the end of the tarmac

Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only. Wherever the sealed surface stops, that is the edge of the conditions.

03

Choose a car that suits the lanes

Small is easier than large on this coast. Each car states its own minimum age and driving experience, and the filters will hide the ones you do not qualify for.

What to have with you

A national licence in Latin script, not a copy, and the deposit card in the main driver’s name.

What that means in full
Four point six kilometres from the centre.

BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF

At the handover,
check three things.

01

Photograph the wheels and the underside

They sit outside standard insurance along with the windscreen and the interior.

02

Stop where you can still turn round

A narrow lane is easier to leave forwards.

03

Keep the phone reachable

The number you booked with has to work throughout the rental and the day before pick-up. It is how a collection point gets confirmed or moved.

What is the road
down to the bay like?

Valdanos is the nearest bay to Ulcinj. The last part of the access road has not been measured.

What is established

Two routing engines put the bay at 4.6 kilometres from the centre of Ulcinj and agree on it to the metre, which works out at about fifteen minutes. It is the only measured figure on this page. Travel posts that describe the approach give no source, so they are not a basis for choosing the car that gets you down there.

The surface of the road is not described here. Nobody has driven it with a tape measure and published the result, and a description written without that would be a guess.

Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only. Where the tarmac ends, the car reaches the edge of the conditions.

At the end of the tarmac

Drive down as far as the sealed surface goes and look at what happens next. If it continues as tarmac, keep going. If it turns to gravel, sand or bare rock, park and walk: past that point the car is outside the conditions, and standard insurance excludes the wheels and the underside.

The same applies to every beach access road on this coast.

Driving off paved roads is outside the rental conditions.

At 4.6 km from the middle of town, parking early and walking the last stretch adds only minutes.

Stop where there is room to turn round.

Which car, and where you pick it up

A small car is easier on the lanes around this coast. Minimum age and driving experience are set per car, and the search filters by both; for a bay this close, collecting it in town first is enough, or the car can be delivered to where you are staying.

Valdanos lies north-west of Ulcinj and Velika Plaza south-east, so both fit in one day with the car.

What the bay itself is, in one line: the tourist organisation gives the beach as 376 metres and a protected natural monument, and the travel publishers who describe it agree it is pebble rather than sand. The last part is on foot from the end of the sealed road.

At the handover

Photograph the wheels, the windscreen and the underside at the handover, with the person handing the car over. Those and the interior are what standard cover excludes.

Keep the phone you booked with reachable, including the day before pick-up, because it is how a delivery or a collection point gets confirmed or moved. And if anything does happen to the car, tell the rental company straight away and get a police report unless they agree otherwise, because failing to do either cancels the insurance on it.
