02

Park before the bridge

Then walk onto the island. The car stays on the paved surface the conditions allow.

Why that matters
03

Know what the cover excludes

Wheels and the undercarriage are outside standard insurance.

04

What to have with you

A national licence in Latin script, not a copy, and the deposit card in the main driver’s name. Each car states its own minimum age and driving experience.

What that means in full
Sixteen kilometres, and the last of it is not tarmac.

BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF

At the handover,
check three things.

01

Photograph the wheels and the underside

They are outside standard insurance. Record them with the person handing the car over.

02

Stop at the bridge

Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only. The island beyond the bridge has no tarmac.

03

Keep it clean enough to inspect

A car returned so dirty that it hinders inspection is washed at your expense.

Where does the tarmac
actually stop?

Ada Bojana is 16 km from Ulcinj; the road to the bridge is paved and the island beyond it is not.

What the surface is, and what the conditions say about it

The island sits at the mouth of the Bojana, about sixteen kilometres from Ulcinj at the far end of the beach, and the drive takes around forty minutes. The road from town to the bridge is paved. The island beyond the bridge has no tarmac, according to the travel sources that describe it, and a single small bridge leads onto it.

The rental conditions permit paved public roads only. Past the bridge, a hire car is off the surface the conditions allow, whether the ground is dry or not.

Standard insurance excludes the wheels and the underside, the parts most exposed on an unmade surface.

How much of this is actually established

The official tourism page for Ada Bojana has photographs and no practical text; the details above come from two travel publishers that agree. They agree that the bridge is the only way on, that there is no toll for the bridge itself, and that a booth a hundred metres or so from it charges per person to enter, with guests of the hotels on the island exempt.

The entry charge and parking on the island have not been measured, so neither is given here.

Both engines agree on the distance to the metre and disagree on the time by twelve minutes.

The road runs the length of the beach to the river mouth.

Parking before the bridge

Park before the bridge and walk. That keeps the car on the paved surface the conditions allow. Velika Plaza runs south from Ulcinj all the way to the river mouth.

There are fish restaurants along the river. Which side of the bridge each one is on has not been established, so check the one you are going to before you set off.

The border is close: the run across into Shkoder is about an hour from Ulcinj in total. Crossing is an add-on: choose a car that offers the cross-border option and add it when you book.

If the car goes past the bridge

The conditions do not allow it.

If anything happens to the car, tell the rental company immediately and get a police report unless they agree otherwise; failing to do either cancels the insurance. A car returned so dirty that it hinders inspection is washed at the customer’s expense.

What do people ask
before they book?

Answers about the drive to Ada Bojana and about the surface at the end of it.

What is the surface beyond the bridge?

The travel sources that describe the island agree there is no tarmac on it. The road from Ulcinj as far as the bridge is paved. Neither has a primary source, so both are attributed to the travel sources.

Is that allowed under the rental conditions?

No. Rental cars are allowed on paved public roads only, so past the bridge the car is off the surface the conditions permit. Park before the bridge and walk.

How far is it from Ulcinj?

About sixteen kilometres and roughly forty minutes. The two routing engines agree on the distance to the metre and differ on the time by twelve minutes.

Is there a charge to get on?

Not for the bridge itself. The sources describe a booth about a hundred metres from it charging per person to enter, with guests of the island’s hotels exempt. The amount has not been verified, so it is not given here.
