BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF

At the handover,
check three things.

01

Check the cross-border add-on is on the rental

Confirm at the handover that the cross-border add-on you chose is on the rental.

02

Photograph what the cover excludes

Wheels, windscreen, the underside and the interior sit outside standard insurance on both sides of the river.

03

Check the fuel level

It comes back at the level you were given, and fuel bought in another country counts the same as fuel bought here.

Crossing a border

Can you take the car
into Albania?

Shkoder is closer to Ulcinj than Budva is. Taking a hire car across is an add-on chosen when you book.

What to add when you book

Crossing into Albania is an add-on in the booking. So the car for the crossing has to be one that offers the cross-border option, with the option added when you reserve.

The fee for the add-on is shown on the car, and it is set by the company that owns it rather than by this site.

The crossing’s opening hours, whether it takes hire cars and the waiting times quoted for August have not been established. What is established about driving from Montenegro into Albania is collected on a separate page.

The route

Shkoder is 41 km from Ulcinj and about an hour, and both routing engines agree on it exactly, in both directions. The crossing is at Sukobin on this side and Muriqan on the other, about 24 km and half an hour from Ulcinj, on the river: the Bojana here, the Buna over there.

The border is about halfway. Tirana is 133 km and about two and three quarter hours, with the airport a little nearer at 119 km and about two and a half.

The road down to the crossing runs past the river mouth. It sits on the same water, on the Montenegrin side, about forty minutes from town.

What you carry across

At the border the same licence rule applies: a valid national licence with the details duplicated in Latin script, valid until at least the end of the rental, and not a copy or an electronic one. If your licence is only valid in the country that issued it, an International Driving Permit is strongly recommended and may be asked for.

Keep the phone reachable, with its country code, throughout the rental. It is a condition of the booking.

Fuel, parking, fines and tolls stay yours for the rental wherever the car is, and the conditions apply in both countries. Standard cover still excludes the wheels, undercarriage, windscreen and interior on the far side of the river as well as on this one.

Half an hour from Ulcinj to the crossing, whatever the crossing itself takes, and half an hour on the other side.

If the trip runs longer, tell the rental company before the rental ends. Extending is allowed with advance notice, and rentals are counted in whole days with a twenty-four hour minimum, so an unplanned night on the far side of the border is another full day rather than a few hours.

Leaving the car in Albania

For flights out of Tirana, leaving it on the far side is not possible through this site. The pick-up and drop-off points this site offers are Montenegrin, so a one-way booked here means one Montenegrin city to another, and the car comes home.

Ulcinj to Tirana Airport is about two and a half hours each way.
